On elbows and Christian morality

I can't believe it's been a month since I posted. Geeze. Sorry. I hope I still have some readers left! I have no excuses other than I've been:

1) learning to navigate life with a 4 month old, which is great and wonderful and way more brain consuming than I was prepared for. I don't want to write when I sit down. I want to nap. Or play sudoku. Or, gasp!, watch television. Good thing the latter is locked away in the storage closet!

2) feeling kind of under the weather. My arthritis has been flaring, and it's taken a volley of cortisone shots and steroids and prayers to get the swelling down in my left elbow. I recently had an MRI to assess the damage to the joint; when I get the results back next week, I'll be able to discuss with my doctor whether or not surgery is an option. I can use the joint, sometimes, but certain movements put me in excruciating pain. Not fun. Especially when your baby weighs NINETEEN pounds. I am getting serious muscles in my right arm, peoples, serious muscles!

So, that's where I've been.

Here are two great posts I recently stumbled upon which are must reads. The first is one I'd like to laminate and pass out to every American Christian I know. Because it seems to be an American Christianity sort of problem, this problem of a rival eschatology

The second is a thought provoking essay about Christian morality. "The degree to which you’re scandalized by the possibility that Jesus might tell you to do something contrary to the Bible is the degree to which you worship the Bible instead of Jesus."

Isn't that compelling and challenging? Read it here!

Thanks so much for picking this piece up. I think there's a lot that we gloss over in how both Jesus and Paul made use of the scriptures that they had access to.
