25

The Brazilian government is offering amnesty and a chance for a permanent visa to foreigners who are illegally in the country. It's really a fantastic plan to legalize and add to the tax rolls the multitude of Asian and South American workers who have crossed the borders or just let their tourist visas expire when they came to look for jobs in São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and other cities. I don't really fit THAT criteria, but I might slip though a crack in the law and get the amnesty anyway. At least, that's the hope. If not, I really only have 25 days to stay.

Ticket prices tend to be high right now, but I found the internet bargain of the week with a base ticket price under US$ 700. So I snatched it up and am now in mourning.

Twenty-five days isn't ever going to be enough time to seal up a life and divide it into storage boxes, suitcases and giveaway piles. Not enough time to say goodbye, not enough weekends to show The Real Prince Charming all the hidden corners of this city I love, not enough time to eat at all the restaurants I've missed out on...

But it's enough time to face up to the fact that life is about to change. I'll be looking for a US based job for a while. Not sure where to start. Dear readers, I don't suppose you know of anyone who is just dying to hire a BA in music with a Brazilian mini-MBA in Marketing who happens to be a really talented writer with a passion for food and poetry? Fluent in Portuguese, passable in Spanish and knows how to walk through a passle of armed drug dealers in full haggle mode without batting an eyelash? Can such a job exist in the Midwest? I console myself as I search the job boards...if nothing else, at least my resume is quite entertaining!

An amusing resume should go a long way toward making your application stand out.

Mandy and I are working at Macy's. They're probably hiring. If you've dealt with murderous drug dealers, you can probably deal with a-hole old ladies who just can't live without that piece of crap that will complete their lives.

I'm sure you could find a place to serve in Mozambique!
